As the ball dropped on December 31, 2019, I had my goals set for the year. 2020 was going to be unique for a variety of reasons. The most important being the beginning of a new decade. In December, I reflected on all the things I accomplished during this past decade. Lots of great stories and some painful ones.
2020 would be better. This decade I decided I had to let go of somethings before moving into this new season. My shortlist includes:
- Old wounds and past traumas
- Bad habits that prevent me from becoming my best self
- Fear (list too long to list)
- Imposter Syndrome
- Being a survivor: Reliance solely on myself
- Poor health choices
I made a conscious decision that this year would be very different. This new decade would bring in more growth than ever over the next ten years.
However, this season would bring COVID-19 and my biggest issue began to unveil itself. The key to most of my problems was terrible habits.
Now, let me clarify, even with my bad habits, I have accomplished a lot. My resume is impressive. The people I have impacted through my work are numerous. The women and men I’ve mentored and seen grow are touching. My daughter is amazing, smart, and sassy. Even though I developed bad habits, I have accomplished a lot. You can do both.
However, my December 2019 goal is still the same. 2020 will be the start of a remarkable decade. If I want to go to my next level, some habits need to change.
REFLECTION OF BAD HABITS
Coming up with my list was easy because of the pandemic. I was home. I couldn’t ignore what was transpiring. I’m going to share my list in hopes of inspiring you to do the same. Are your goals for this year the same? I know changing a few habits on your end will make a big difference.
Here is my list. Don’t judge me!
- Creating schedules and not sticking to them because I don’t FEEL like it
- Staying up way past my bedtime because I can
- Practicing avoidance at tasks that I hate (I’m not fond of housework)
- Not engaging with my daughter as much as I could (She’s also a teenager)
- Making excuses about why I don’t do things
- Not exercising when I have absolutely NO EXCUSE
HOMEWORK
Yes, you know what’s coming! Make your list. You can’t change what you don’t acknowledge. Make a list of those practices that are keeping you from living your best life!
“Your habits, good or bad, determine your destiny. The habits you currently have are producing the results; you’re experiencing in your life,”
Terri Savelle Foy, Author, “Dream it, Pin it, Love it”
Please, remember, making a list of your poor practices is not about feeling bad about yourself. I have no shame about any one of them. Many were developed to cope during periods of my life or because of my family structure. I learned some others along the way. However, I offer myself grace, and so should you. The list is an acknowledgment of some things that need to change not a judgment on who you are.
So excited!! Let’s go! 2020 Can still be great!
Please make sure to comment below some of your habits. Don’t leave me hanging!
Next month’s focus will be on changing those habits! Stay tuned!.

God had already told my what to do for 2020 as I made my list in November 2019 as I was planning for the last few months of 2019 and the first quarter of 2020. I was to schedule to two events/speaking engagements, revamp my website, learn to perfect social media, spend more time with God, exercise more often. Well covid hit and right in the middle of my list everything stopped. It took some time to get back on track but I am finally looking ahead and learning to do business in a different way while checking off more on my list.
